On Saturday jazz singer Meg Corson came to Yass with her group of musicians comprising Wayne Kelly on the piano (He loved playing our Steinway Grand!!), Greg Stott on guitar, James Luck on bass and Mark Sutton on drums to present the final concert in the Yass Music Club's 2014 Subscription series to a large and very enthusiastic audience.

It was a special memorial concert being dedicated to Katherine Holmes and Mary Reid and it was a delight to host a number of the ever supportive Holmes family with Malcolm, Nick and Kate in attendance. The observation was made that those great ladies, who are so fondly remembered at this time, would have enjoyed the music that Meg and her group presented. Mention was also made of our sadness at the death of Marjorie Bailey, who was for many years the Secretary of the Federated Music Clubs of Australia.
Meg's repertoire is undoubtedly jazz but her diverse experience easily allowed her to let the mood guide her as to where her songs go (and she had a band that followed) and they presented popular jazz classics made famous by Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin as well as from some more modern jazz artists such as Melody Gardot, Caro Emerald and artists such as Sting and we were treated to a wonderful range of great songs from Meg which included 'My funny valentine', 'Someone to watch over me', 'Blue moon', 'How high the moon', 'Stardust', the Gardot favourites 'My one and only thrill' and 'Who will comfort me'. as well as 'Angel eyes', 'You don't know what love is' and 'Round midnight' and many more and she could have been there all night had the fans had their way.
As with all good jazz groups, each of the artists had the opportunity to show their individual skills in solo segments and their sense of ensemble was heightened as each one of them showed his musical wares. Meg's long awaited solo album isn’t quite finished yet so won’t be available for purchase yet but should be available shortly and we were treated to some ‘teaser performances’ of a couple of tunes from the album!
The Friends of Cooma Cottage provided the usual delicious supper that Yass Music Club concerts always provides and we are delighted to be able to continue support local community groups in furthering their activities.

The Hall stage was much enhanced by the beautiful floral decorations done by Marion McCarthy but the audience experienced some discomfort from the humidity through the lack of air cooling or conditioning and we couldn't even open the windows to circulate the air better.
