According to the Yass Valley Council's Community Profile, 3,852, or 49.6 per cent of Yass' working residents travel outside of the area to work. Alex Tewes, Principal of Yass Regional Co-working, proposes a new option for those who are tired of the commute.
Yass Regional Co-working is an innovative service being proposed to assist both small business operators and those who work in Canberra, but dislike the expensive and long commute to the office.
The aim of Yass Regional Co-working is to create an attractive, safe, and cost-effective work environment in Yass with all the features you would expect in your traditional office, such as WiFi, printers, and other facilities.
“The arrangements would meet typical WHS requirements, be available for use 24/7, for regular rather than casual users, and most importantly, let you ditch the isolation of your typical 'spare room' home office,” Mr Tewes said.
“As a former public servant, I spent many years driving back and forth to the office in Canberra. I grew very tired of the drive and missed the time wasted in commuting, but I love living in Yass. Now I work from my home office, and I find it very isolating."
Mr Tewes said co-working is a style of work that involves a shared work environment, with independent activity. The program is aimed at work-from-home professionals, independent contractors, and those for whom the daily commute is a time-consuming chore.
“The facility would help parents create more of sustainable lifestyle, being closer to their children and families, help with their productivity and allow for money saved on travel and office space in Canberra.”
“Co-working offers a solution to the problem of isolation that many freelancers experience while working from home, while at the same time, letting them escape the distractions of home,” Mr Tewes said.
