A small but well represented crowd gathered around the Gunning Cenotaph on Tuesday to remember the signing of the armistice that signalled the end of World War One in 1918, and to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

An unexpected treat was the adorning of the cenotaph with knitted red poppies that have been created as part of the Gunning Library remembrance wall. The 497 poppies have been knitted by local Gunning residents in response to the ‘5000 Poppies’ community initiative which has now reached a staggering 50,000 and counting.
The Gunning Public School and the Gunning Early Learning Centre both laid wreaths in what was a great demonstration that our young have not forgotten. The Gunning Early Learning Centre was all adorned in red which was a great sight.
Thank you to all those who made the effort to attend the ceremony which gave us a fitting preview of what the Anzac 2015 commemorations will be like.
Often it is the chance events in our lives that are the richest and most treasured. They occur unexpectedly and reveal exquisite jewels of great rarity and this was no exception. Its times like this that Ann takes a break from the column and I get these chances.
While catching up over a coffee in the ‘Old Hume Café’ with Dave Findlay talking all things Anzac, I noticed a Ruby Red Porsche 356 SC gleaming and resplendent parked before us. The owner was sitting at the next table enjoying his coffee and the paper with his small dog.
The 356 SC, which had been the hands of the owner for the last 40 years, was not always red but grey, it was painted in the 1990s.
The final treat was to hear it start up and burble up the street. It emitted what can only be described as a note like a VW beetle on steroids, enhanced by the induction roar of the twin solexs.
For those who follow ABC Landline, you would have been surprised to see some familiar faces, with local wool grower’s wives featuring in a segment on Walwa station at Gurrundah. The show featured a young Indian fashion designer, Rahul Mishra, who has embraced fine merino wool fibre for his award winning garments and has ventured to Walwa to see it.
It is has been replayed several times and currently is available on IVIEW at http://www.abc.net.au/landline/content/2014/s4114724.htm if you had not managed to see it broadcasted.
