Bendigo has gone for something a lot more practical. And, no, it’s not a giant fly swat. It’s the Big Security Door.
The brainchild, or should we say the result of a Friday night drink between Ross Bowden and his team at Windridge Security Doors, the giant security door spanning 5m high by 2.3m wide was quickly on its way to being built.
“We have now put Long Gully - and even Bendigo on the map,” Ross laughs. “We had to do something different, It is quirky - my wife and one of my sons thought I was mad. But, then, you have got to have a bit of fun.”
Amazingly the door frame took only one day to build and Ross enticed some fellow business operators in Bendigo to help complete the project.
“By them helping out also shows we are not the only mad devils around,” he says.
The door in its striking bright green colour called Parakeet, chosen by Ross’s eldest son Cameron who partners in the business, looms large at the entrance to their Long Gully business.
“It’s a talking point - people are driving by, see it and then call in. It’s been good for business as it’s a good advertising gimmick.”
Ross and his youngest son, Ryan, believe the door to be the biggest in the world. “I did a bit of a search on line and couldn’t come up with anything like it,” Ryan says. Laughs Ross: “It’s the biggest door until I say it isn’t.”
