I read with interest Joe McDonough's 'Japanese Visit' article from last Friday which mentioned Paul Watchorn's recent successful direct sale of wool to the Japanese company, Muji. The Japanese were only interested in wool from non-mulesed sheep. Mr Watchorn had ceased mulesing six years ago.
We at 'Euralie' ceased mulesing eight years ago and recently, also were successful in selling our non-mulesed wool to a purchaser who only buys non-mulesed at a premium.
On a trip to the UK last year, I was surprised to find that processors in Bradford were only accepting non-mulesed wool - as is the case in the rest of Europe and the the USA.
Therefore, it seems that if we are to regain a premium for superfine wool, non-mulesing will be a significant factor.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Simons,
