Dr Pragya Budhaulia studied medicine in Delhi, India, and she moved to Australia six years ago to gain more exposure within her specialty of skin cancer.
“It is a huge problem here in Australia, it is a very commonly-ignored health problem and I am trying to create awareness of it as best I can,” Dr Budhaulia said.
It is by far the most common cancer in the country, with hundreds of thousands of people affected each year. The deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, is diagnosed around 11,000 times a year with around 1800 dying as a result.
“I do skin checks and skin excisions, the worst thing about skin cancer is that sometimes it isn’t apparent you have it, there are no symptoms like other diseases,” she said.
Dr Budhaulia has also worked in Kempsey for two and a half years, Goulburn and Wollongong, and is excited to build a life here in Yass.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know the community, I think that’s the hardest part about moving to a new place, putting yourself out there and hoping that people like you.”
“I can see this is a beautiful place to call home.”
The Yass Valley, as a farming area, has many of its residents working outside in the hot sun and Dr Budhaulia hopes that her skills will be a perfect match for the community.
“Although I work a lot with womens health, I am a general practitioner and treat everyone,” she said.
Growing up in Delhi, Dr Budhaulia was also never given the opportunity to learn to swim.
“I couldn’t wait to get to into the water when I got here, one of my patients actually in Kempsey was teaching me and I am hoping to continue lessons here in Yass, I’m just loving it,” she said.
Dr Budhaulia is now practicing at the new medical centre open at Irvine Sqaure in Yass.
