A witness who phoned triple-0 said they could hear the driver crying out for help about 7.30am on Monday after his vehicle crashed over the cliff at Burrows Park, off Ocean Street.

The dark-coloured vehicle landed on its roof on the rock platform below, just metres from the water.

Remarkably, the driver is not believed to have suffered any major injuries.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said one person managed to climb out of the vehicle, before yelling out for help.

Police rescue officers could not initially reach the rock platform, the spokeswoman said.

A NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter winched paramedics down to treat the man, who was lying near the rock face.

He was stabilised on the rocks before the helicopter winched him to safety about 9am.

He was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.

One man who was at the scene said the crash occurred about 100 metres from the Clovelly Bowling Club, and the cliff where the car crashed was quite high.

"It's a long way down, I tell you," he said.

Police estimated the cliff was about 30 metres high.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
