Iain is keen to see Yass and other regional areas in the electorate thrive as part of the Capital Region.
Population pressures in the cities and major regional centres can be at least partly addressed by sensitive, sustainable growth and good development located in and compatible with great towns like Yass.
Iain believes that preserving heritage, tradition, quality of life and environment is absolutely crucial. The planning laws must be turned upside down so that local government and the community are the decision makers.
Coupled with that, Iain’s focus is on affordable, comfortable and fast public transport services into the future, minimising the reliance on car commuting in the longer term, and making Yass more accessible for business, pleasure and work. Right now, Iain will push for (and the Greens have already pushed for in the Federal Senate) duplicating the Barton highway and if necessary bypassing Murrumbateman on the grounds of road safety on an increasingly concentrated commuter thoroughfare.
Getting the mix right for Yass will bring business and community based projects to Yass to energise the local economy, provide a wide diversity of local job opportunities so that our youth stay interested, employed and busy. Iain believes in the need for local education to be a strong foundation for the community. He will work to ensure schools are located wherever the need is and are equipped to meet those needs, and TAFE is funded to be the leader in higher education and training, keeping the region’s community skilled and productive.
Iain will work to restore the availability and quality of affordable housing in the region to combat the growing levels of substandard accommodation and homelessness. He will also work with local government to kick start projects owned by the community in areas such as health and support services, waste management, renewable energy and energy efficiency, transport and new technologies. Creating income, work and business opportunities, self-reliance and a healthy environment will be Iain’s priorities.
The Greens campaign launch in Yass will be on Saturday the 21st February. Search the web for Iain at Greens NSW if you would like to make contact or come to the launch.
