The truck was travelling east when it hit a low hanging branch about 3pm on Saturday, police said, causing the branch to fall between its cabin and trailer and then on to three cars.
No one was hurt.
"Unfortunately the truck driver just didn't realise he was too big for the side of the street he was on," Karen Eck, who witnessed the accident from three cars back, said.
"I saw the truck hit the branch, it wobbled, then fell on the cars, literally crushing them. Luckily everyone was almost stationary and no one was hurt."
Traffic is heavy after the incident, between Anzac Parade and South Dowling Street, and drivers are advised to avoid the area.
Ausgrid are on the scene to fix damaged powerlines.
