The Red Fox has been a very successful coloniser, adapting to wide swathes of the Australian landscape and urban areas. It has decimated many native species and causes havoc amongst stock and backyard poultry. Introduced to Australia in 1833 for the sport of fox hunting, it has become an apex predator with estimated numbers over seven million.
The very successful Feral Fox Fighters campaign has continued to gain momentum with groups signing up to wage war against this introduced killer. It was started by the Jerrawa Creek Landcare Group and has expanded beyond its catchment with South Eastern Local Land Services Biosecurity Group planning to introduce it over the entire region. There are still opportunities to form groups – all you need are six or more neighbours with relatively close properties.
Dung beetles are great for restoring nutrients to the soil but guess what? Those darned foxes, the ultimate adaptors, have developed a taste for the dung beetles. They sit beside cow pats of an evening and just grab the big beetles out of the air. A fox shot south of Cooma yielded 72 big blue beetles in its belly!

It was the news of Narromine all those decades ago that their crack horseman, the gun rider, local Frank Short had been beaten by a ring-in from Gunning at the local Narromine show. This all came to light at the Australia Day celebration when locals John Clancy and Michael Vaughan were teasing each other about that long ago event.
Michael was raised in Narromine and Frank Short was one of his eight uncles, the equestrian scion of the town. John Clancy then aged only 17 years was the ring-in that had snatched the crown from Michael’s Uncle Frank and as Michael recalls he was pretty dirty about it!
The horse events at the Gunning Show this Sunday are expected to be fought out fiercely as success is often the gateway to entry into higher level events such as The Royal Canberra Show on from February 27 to March 1. However we all expect that fairness will prevail.
By the way, did I mention that John Clancy and the team he was travelling with including a string of twenty horses, thought it prudent to leave Narromine by nightfall.
The dog show is also expected to be bigger and better than ever, with around 600 dogs set to converge on Gunning Showground.
