Sunday March 1, Australia celebrated 25 years of volunteer action for Clean Up Australia Day and Yass was taking part, with many residents participating in the clean at Riverbank Park.
Councillor Jones participated in the clean and was impressed by the residents who gave their time to clean up the town.
“It's such a popular recreational spot and well maintained by council but take a few steps into the scrub and there are old drink bottles and chip packets caught in the grass and weeds. They've washed down from the roadways and storm water outlets. We caught half a dozen bottles floating near the weir. While glass and aluminium were also found the main culprit was plastic,” Cr Jones said.
"The kids were very keen to participate in their third year cleaning up Riverbank Park and were given plenty of encouragement and 'thank you's' from walkers getting their exercise.”
