I was extremely pleased to read Kath Turner’s letter in your paper on February 25. It has prompted me to write to you for the first time in my 54 years in Yass.
As a Council employee for 37 of those 54 years, I refrained from writing to the paper mainly because there was no reason for me to do so because the councils I worked with and the people of the Shire, did not resort to the activities I am now reading about in your paper.
I completely endorse Kath’s comments about the facilities available to everyone in Yass and a walk down the Yass river is now a pleasure for all. I remember when the willows almost obscured the water. Who is responsible for the big improvements to the river and the other hundreds of facilities in Yass and the villages? Your council and the host of organisations encouraged to work on community facilities by council and its staff.
I am amazed that the Mayor and senior staff are receiving so much abuse from a small section of the community, and I sympathise with them all.
I am relieved that my 37 years with council were enjoyable and free of flack being delivered by a few people who did not get what they wanted.
What has changed in the minds of the Yass people in recent years that has resulted in the abuse of elected officials, the general manager and his staff?
I know that they all work in the interests of the community but some of you don’t seem to understand that. Wake up and appreciate all the great things that have happened in Yass and the villages in recent years.
