“There are 34 projects funded in Hume under the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme – the largest number of approved applications for a Federal electorate in Australia,” Mr Taylor said.
In Yass $6,900 will go towards the Yass RSL Sub-Branch’s Salute to the Original Anzacs Exhibition, $5,000 to the Gundaroo War Memorial Project from the Gundaroo Community Association and $1,500 will be sent to Bowning to help fund the First World War Memorial coordinated by the Bowning & District Lions Club.
Secretary of the Bowning & District Lions Club, Bob Richardson said that they had applied for this funding before July last year.
“We actually applied for a $5000 in grant money and we got $1500, but we still haven’t received that money,” he told the Tribune.
There will also be $1,500 set aside for the enhancement of the existing memorial at Binalong by the Binalong Progress Association.
“We had such an outstanding response from local communities and have consequently been able to fund an enormous range of projects and moving tributes planned for this centenary year,” Mr Taylor said.
He said one of the standout events in Hume would be the Kangaroo March Centenary Re-Enactment, which had received $13,319 in funding. It's scheduled for for September/October this year.
The Kangaroo March will follow the original recruitment route in 1915 through towns including Cootamundra, Wallendbeen, Harden, Galong, Binalong, Yass, Jerrawa, Gunning, Cullerin, Goulburn, Marulan, Tallong, Wingello, Bundanoon, Exeter, Moss Vale, Mittagong, Colo Vale, Hill Top and Thirlmere.
Mr Taylor encouraged everyone to take time to support these local events and commemorations to mark the historic occasion of the Anzac Centenary.
