The camp involved local Yass students, as well as members of Han Mu Taekwondo from Melbourne and members from Global Martial Arts in Sydney.
The event was fortunate to host athletes from a range of backgrounds, including some who have represented Australia at international tournaments such as the Oceania Championships, US Open, and the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships held in Scotland.
This was a great opportunity for athletes as Master Barrett has represented and Captained Australian Teams in the past at the World Championships as well as coaching in Russia at World Champs, and he has been Head Coach for other Australian teams.
He has also represented Australia and the Oceania Region at the last two World Championships as an International Judge. It was his expertise along with the beautiful Yass country location, which attracted students to the three day training event.
Over the weekend athletes were trained extensively in poomsae and poomsae competition, a growing sport in the Taekwondo style. This non contact aspect of the martial art requires athletes to be trained in strength, flexibility, and coordination as they demonstrate learned technical patterns for multiple judges.
Athletes were put through technical drills, world poomsae recognised changes, and talks on new competition rules to come out of the recent last World Poomsae Championships which were held in Mexico at which Master Barrett officiated.
The training also included a Positive Self Talk presentation by local Instructor Vivienne Barrett. The talk involved how to mentally prepare for competitions as well as how to maintain focus and be positive even when an athlete experiences common setbacks. The last day had all participants compete in a competition judged by the International Referee (Barrett) and two Oceania Taekwondo Union Judges which was designed to give athletes important feedback and to help them create realistic future goals.
Overall the camp was a huge success with more planned to follow. Sipjin Taekwondo would like to thank all the clubs and students who supported this wonderful opportunity and the parents of all the participants both local and from afar.
