It is with considerable urgency that the lady members of local branch of the Red Cross are seeking to enlist some new active members. Due to diminishing numbers and the advanced age of most of the members, it is felt that unless new (active) members can be recruited, the branch may have to close. Anyone interested is invited to attend a meeting at the Hotel Binalong at 7.30pm on June 15. If there is no interest shown in this meeting and no likelihood of new members, the probable closure of the branch will be discussed at the next meeting (which anyone may attend) on June 18. Zone President Noeleen Hazell will attend the meeting on June 18 and speak of the options available to the branch members. The Binalong Branch has been active continuously for 48 years and it will be a great regret to many people if lack of numbers forces it to close.

The school scene appears to be very busy as usual, with Walk to School Day, Book Week, Grandparents Day and the Biggest Morning Tea all on this week. There’s also the qualifiers for the District Cross Country to be held at Cootamundra. ‘Sporting Schools’ has also begun and presently the kids are learning to play golf starting with frisbee golf. Mrs Smith and Mrs Morse participated in the first training in the Language, Learning and Literacy programme at Wagga last week.
Last week the infants received their new Engine Room desks, which enables the teacher to be in the middle of the group.
The students are also involved in creating puppets, with a view to staging a performance with their creations. The teachers are also asking for old magazines, papers and catalogues etc for use in their literacy and numeracy programmes.
Star winners last week were Thomasina Knight, Alivia Kruger and Riley Blewitt.
Golfers were few and far between (literally, with three women on one nine and a small group of men on the other) despite the ideal conditions. The course in pretty good condition, too. Ethel Lee won the ladies trophy donated by Cora Fairall while the men's trophy, donated by Mark Sykes, went to Chris Glover.
A more pleasing number played a medley event on Sunday, for the trophy donated by Tony Crossing and after notching up the most stableford points, John Lee was declared the winner with the runner up being Dave Bedford.
On the programme for next Saturday is a nine holes medley stroke event for a trophy that Tony Blair will provide (starting time 2pm) and on Sunday Peter Minson and Lindsay McDonald will donate the trophies and play will begin at 12.30pm. Names in by 12pm if possible.
The second round of the match play competition has finished and manager John Lee, says "the field is tightening up". At the weekend Ethel lost to Ben Glover, Dave Bedford was put out by Joe Dyball, Chris Glover defeated Tony Barton and due to a leg injury, Helen Curtis forfeited to Monica. Hopefully Helen's leg injury will heal quickly.
Carilyn Muscat celebrated her birthday with family at the golf club on Sunday night. Hope she had a great night.
