It was a case of close but not quite for the Aussie Hotel Yass Roos against Cootamundra Blues last Saturday at Joe O’Connor Park. The final score of Blues 14.7(91) to Yass 10.18(78) tells part of the story in what was a game of two contrasting halves for Yass.

It was almost as if the Roos had their boots on the wrong feet until half time. With more scoring opportunities the Roos could only manage 3.13(31) to half time while the Blues made the most of their chances to rack up 10.5(65). It was the poor finishing in front of goal that ultimately cost the Roos this match.
They had plenty of possession and in the second half were tackling and pressuring the Blues ferociously. A return of seven goals and five behinds in the second half was a much better outcome for the Roos. The Blues held on, however, and took the win despite being outscored in the second.
It was a very entertaining match especially when the Roos made the comeback in the second half. The strong crowd was very vocal with plenty of support for both sides and you could tell the Coota crowd were getting worried near the end. Unfortunately time ran out for the Roos and Cootamundra took the win. I think there will be some goal-kicking practice at training this week.
Best players for the Roos were Jon Randles, Toby Serafin, Adam Forth, Brendan Roweth, Cam Attwell and Ryan Forlonge. Cam Attwell also managed three goals, Brendan Roweth, Damian Philippa and Dave Willersdorf got two each and Paul Willersdorf got one.
Despite the loss the Roos can take heart that they played very well around the ground. They got good use of the footy and several players are really shaping up as great ball getters. The next step is just to use the ball better when they have it and make the most of scoring opportunities. As this game proved, possession doesn’t win games, the score does. With the other winners for the round being Goulburn Swans and the Cooma Cats the Roos still hold fourth spot on the ladder by percentage from Ainslie and Tuggeranong.
This week the Roos have another night game on Friday at Greenway Oval against the Tuggeranong Hawks. Hopefully conditions will be better than last time’s wet and cold evening. The Hawks have struggled since their two opening wins and the Roos will be looking to inflict a big loss to build percentage in the race for a finals berth.
So rug up and get to Tuggeranong to support the Roos on Friday night. The game begins at 7pm. I’ll see you at the footy.
