The first-grade Yass side overcame Gungahlin United at home on Saturday, eventually winning 6-3.
In a stellar return from injury, Ryan Wing was named Players' Player after playing almost 90 minutes in the middle of the park.
Goalscorers were Brett Darmody (2), Brad Nielson (2), Brendon Scanes and Jarrad Porter, who scored off a free kick, well beyond the 18-yard box.
Yass had the game wrapped up early, and only a couple of defensive lapses late on allowed Gungahlin to put a couple of goals on the board.
Burns is coming off an impressive 7-1 win over Brindabella and the away trip to Giralang will be Yass' toughest test since the season began.
In the division six match, Yass was well beaten by Gungahlin.
The Division 6 visitors sit well clear at the top of the table and are unbeaten so far this season.
Their class showed as well, walking away with a 7-1 victory under their belt.
Yass trailed by just 2-1 at the halftime break, but couldn't keep in touch and fell away late in the second.
Oliver Watson took home Players' Player, after seeing stars due to a head clash late in the second stanza.
Coach Gary Lennon said he was primarily disappointed with the result of the first game.
"It was a really important game for the Division 6 side and it's a shame we lost," he said.
"I'm fairly confident our first grade side is going to make the finals but a win on the weekend would have really helped the second grade.
"Unfortunately we didn't get the win but Gungahlin was really good, they're clearly the benchmark side and competition favourites."
The Division 6 side will face Belnorth at Giralang on Saturday from 1pm, and the Division 5 men will follow them, against Burns, at 3pm.
After enjoying the week off, the women will return to the field with both Division 3 and 4 competing against ANU at Wanniassa. Matches start at 12pm on Sunday.
