This is not a competition; there are no winners or losers. All women nominated will be included in the 2015 Honour Roll that will be launched at the annual NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Glen Innes between October 9 and 11.
If you know a woman who makes our community a better place in which to live through her drive, hard work and enthusiasm, then make sure to nominate her by sharing her story in a few paragraphs.
Contact the Rural Women’s Network for further information on 02 6391 3433 or email rural.women@dpi.nsw.gov.au. You may complete an online nomination or download a nomination form from the DPI website.
Nominations close Friday July 31.
Margarita on show
The work of Gunning’s Margarita Georgiadis will join that of fellow artists Athi Lamech and Susie Sierra at the Aarwun Gallery’s Winter 2015 show, opened this Friday at 5.30pm by well-known arts editor Helen Musa OAM.
Aarwun Gallery is the business of locals Bob and Lorna Stephens and is at Shop 11, Federation Square, Nicholls, ACT.
Feral wild life
A local resident found a fox calmly sitting at her laneway gate that did not move till she shooed it away. And that was in broad daylight at 9.30am! Social media is alive with reports of village people losing poultry, a distressing experience that I know from first hand. I noticed that there are useful hints on the internet including one of placing a ‘skirt’ of wire around the chook pen perimeter fence, out about half a metre.
Buying Australian
I know there are plenty of foodies in the Gunning community including Gunning School students. Many will also be interested in the country of origin of food we buy that is vitally important for the agribusinesses of our district.
Current labelling is very confusing. The Australian government is inviting comment on some possible changes to make it easier to recognise whether a product is from Australia and how much Australian content is contained.
An online consumer survey is at www.industry.gov.au/cool and closes on Friday July 3.
Gunning on camera
Gunning and district is an area that has the four seasons. Being the altitude that it is along with the various panoramas that the country provides, there are many opportunities to capture images that are not so common or are painted by the season. The best way for us to capture and share in this beauty is through the lens.
The Gunning and District Historical Society looks to produce a 2016 calendar so get snapping so that we can put our district on display. We will be hoping for contributions from all age groups in early spring.
Boy's Cinema
A magazine entitled Boy’s Cinema dated October 1933 was discovered in a Gunning home during renovations that was devoted to recounting complete film stories. It was rather sobering to also find amongst the advertisements in this boys magazine one for the “Britannia Air Pistol”, with supplies of darts and slugs included.
Times were different and perhaps more innocent then, when many boys had air pistols and learnt to shoot from an early age.
