Those who braved the cold before the rain saw good numbers of Murray cod being caught and some good size fish as well. Local angler Kobin Rasker was one of the lucky ones who got to the river before the rain chasing Murray cod on the surface. Coming up trumps with an eighty six centimetre model and another smaller model for a few hours of fishing. Surface fishing for cod is extremely exhilarating and I highly recommend all anglers giving it a go. With lures like the Jackall Pomapdour, Shimano Triple Impact and King Fisher Mantis you are well equipped to hopefully bear witness to the explosive strike that a Murray Cod produces.

With the rain came a welcome influx to the local dams as well with Burrinjuck fairing best in its increase, this also came with a considerable drop in its clarity. Don’t be alarmed this will right itself over the coming weeks and the fishing options will begin to rise. Some fishermen braving the conditions have seen continued numbers of yellowbelly captures in the submerged trees and the odd cod for those trolling Spinnerbaits and Hard Bodies along the many rock walls. 

I recently travelled to Blowering Dam to attempt my own trophy cod capture. Unfortunately it wasn’t the case, but some nice fish have been showing themselves to those willing to do the time on the water. Reports from other boaters included fish to 95cms. 

Blowering’s clear water, even at its current low capacity, still boasts many options. We found that the sounder (not so much the fish) was most active between twenty five and forty foot of water. And for our hard work I was repaid with a small cod on an Ecogear ZX blade while targeting some resident yellow belly we had spotted.

Down on the coast the increase of salmon numbers is definitely worth noting and those still looking for a bream or flathead have been rewarded with some great captures. Locating some deep water and the baitfish is your best option as this is where the majority of fish will hunt for food and likely be fooled by your lure or bait.
