The girls kicked off at 1:55pm in sunny but cool conditions and Kaylah Smith received the kick and went straight through the Trundle defence untouched to score under the sticks; Jess Howard converted to bring up the 6-0 score after three minutes.
Bron Pollack then started her ballistic run in the seventh minute to score the first of her five tries for the day. The conversion was missed and with the score at 10-0, disaster struck when Kaylah Smith rolled an ankle and took no further part in the match. Jess Howard was next to score and Alison Giles took over the kicking duties to kick the first of her seven goals. Spiderwoman in Maddie Miller was back to score the first of her two tries for the day.
To close the first half, Cherrae Smith scored the try for the 24-0 oranges result. The second half contained some frivolous use of the ball, which at times blossomed into most attractive football, they tried different things and had players running onto the ball and it looked good. The Jersey Girls defence was rock solid; the hapless Trundle “Sunflowers” did not trouble the scorer all day. It was a very solid performance to win 56-0. The Jerseys sit in third behind Condo.
The first grade game was played with as many as eight regulars out being rested or with injuries. Binalong used a number of juniors, who acquitted themselves very well, not the least of which was Dylan Downey. Trundle has a resilient pack which tested the visitors hard and the scoring opened with the Boomers in for a 6-0 lead in the fourth minute. The more we see of Henry Paton the better. Paton was all over the shop and brought the score back to 6-4 soon after.
The home side struck again minutes later to go up 10-6 and the struggle continued. The Brahmans conceded a lot of unforced errors and didn’t perform to their own high standards. Reuben Olah and Haiden Bush took the ball up strongly all day. In the 25th minute Daniel Poidevin scored in the right corner to finish the half time score of ten all.
Tension began to build for almost all the first half of the second stanza as neither team could gain the upper hand. Finally the Boomers broke through and the Brahmans were down 16-10. Captain Chris Rawlinson took matters into his own hands minutes after with a converted try under the sticks to level it up at sixteen a piece. With less than six minutes remaining, Trundle was awarded a penalty almost in front, but from a kickable position well back from the posts. Strangely they elected not to take the two points, but to play on and they promptly obliged their visitors by dropping the ball.
Minutes later, the Trundle players got another penalty but their kicker sliced the ball across the face of goal. At 16-16 the frustration caused an all in melee with 50 seconds to go, and the referee didn’t stop the clock. Next Saturday the Brahmans are at home against Cargo, the girls go around at 1.40pm, the main game is 3pm.
