In the 1950s, as a young child, I had a Red Cross uniform. I especially remember the lovely red cape I wore. Times have changed but this organisation continues as the most remarkable humanitarian organisation of our times.

The Binalong Branch of The Australian Red Cross is holding its Annual General Meeting at 4pm on Thursday July 16. All community members are invited to attend at the Hotel Binalong Lounge. Come a little earlier for some afternoon tea. New members are welcome to attend and hear the highlights of the year’s activities. Annual membership of this humanitarian organisation is only $5 per year. Enquiries can be directed to Elaine Dougherty (Hon Sec) on 6227 4419.
Red Cross membership is open to anyone who wishes to help others. Although in the early history of the Binalong Red Cross there were theme days, concerts and fashion parades, these days, many of these events have been taken over by the Binalong Arts Group, which does a remarkable job promoting local talent. However, the Red Cross group continues to raise money for humanitarian crises such as the Nepalese earthquakes. Meetings are now being scheduled for 4pm to encourage new members for the next generation of the Binalong Red Cross who can learn from the past and look forward to the future.
The Australian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement with millions of members and volunteers operating in over 189 countries. Red Cross works with the most vulnerable people and communities in Australia and internationally.
The Red Cross is well known for relief work in disasters and crises, and is committed to be the world’s leading humanitarian actor. It is present during disasters and in evidence long after, being well-placed to assist in development.
