The mother of two passed away at Canberra Hospital on Tuesday, surrounded by husband Richie, children Caleb (13) and Bridget (9), and her mother Shirl, stepdad Trevor, brother Daniel and sister Sheree.

People from all walks have already taken to social media, flooding it with memories and tributes for the Bowning girl, and expressing their sympathies for the Callow and Taylor family and friends.  

Mel’s family expressed their gratitude for the wonderful support and friendship they have received over the last six months and are preparing a statement in the next few weeks. They also wanted to thank Yass Hospital, Canberra Hospital and Woden Hospital.

Best friends Shay Winter and Kaz Newman described Mel's approach to life as to - live, love and laugh - the sentiment left behind on a necklace.

“She always said she was lucky to have us as friends, but we were the lucky ones to have her in our lives - she made everyone feel that way.

“It didn’t matter what walk of life you were from, Mel always found something special about you.”

Mel was a beloved part of the Yass Valley community and beyond, evidenced by the overwhelming support the community offered upon news of her illness.

“She was the first one to put up her hand to help, she just loved making people happy. Taking on the world one smile at a time," Kaz said. 

“When we look back, all we can see are beautiful memories we can cherish always.

“The community has felt a great loss this week.”

Friend Lisa Raponi emphasised the same sentiments, saying Mel would be missed by all.

“She was just patient and tolerant, the heart of the Bowning restaurant and community. She will be sorely missed by everyone,” she said.

The funeral is expected to be held early next week.

Friends and family invite all members of the community to come along to the Bowning Hotel for a group photograph on Sunday afternoon at 4pm to help pay tribute to the life of Mel Callow. People are encouraged to bring along white or pink balloons.
