Unfortunately the Division 3 women had a tough end to the regular season, losing 4-2 to Belsouth.
Coach Ingrid Davis took some of the blame, saying her players did their best.
“It was probably more my the fault than the players,” she told the Tribune.
“We had already secured our spot in the semi-finals so I played around a bit with positions and we were a bit too relaxed going into the game.”
Finishing fourth on the ladder means Division 3 has to play the undefeated Belnorth for a place in the grand final next weekend.
“The girls will really have to pull out all stops if we are going to make the grand final,” Davis said.
However, Davis said just making it to the semi-finals has been a tremendous achievement for the team.
“We moved up into a higher division this year and have certainly managed to play some quality football. The commitment from the players this year has been awesome – regardless of next Sunday’s result I am incredibly proud of how well we performed.”
Rose Murphy, Jessica Cole, Victoria Alley and Dani Farthing were standouts on Saturday, as was goalkeeper Belle Green.
Division 4 has finished the season winning nine games in a row, which has left them in third place on the ladder.
For the majority of these players it has been their first year playing senior football, so they have shown that women’s football in Yass has a bright future.
According to Davis, coach Kath Farnell has done some really great things with the side. They play second-placed Belnorth at Harrison on Sunday at 2.30pm and have the potential to push their way to the grand final.
They beat top of the ladder ANU 2-0 two weeks ago so they are performing at their peak at the right end of the season.
Maddison Douven (2), Shannon Wright, Annie Hill (2), Chloe Jones and Ash Parker all scored this weekend against Belsouth, giving them a 7-2 win.
The Yass Redbacks men’s sides had a horror day out in Tuggeranong on Saturday.
The Red and Blacks lost both major semi-finals fairly convincingly, with Division 6 going down 5-0 and Division 5 losing 3-1.
Up against an undefeated Gungahlin United side, Yass’ Division 6 side went into the game strong underdogs. And, spectators quickly found out why, with Gungahlin jumping out to a 2-0 lead by the break.
Things got even harder for Yass after oranges, too, with United eventually adding another three goals.
The Players’ Player accolade was shared between Ryan Betts, Grant Taylor and Oliver Watson on the day.
Yass started much better in the Division 5 match, and scored early on in the piece thanks to Mitch Darmody, who capitalised on a rare Burns Club mistake.
But Yass couldn’t keep the lead for long, with Burns hitting back straight away before going up 2-1 not long after. Burns soon made it 3-1, sewing up their position in the grand final this Saturday week.
Coach Gary Lennon said it was a disappointing day out for him and his squad.
“I tried a couple of things in those games and they just didn’t work,” he said.
“It’s pretty simple though, we just weren’t anywhere close to good enough, in either game today.”
Division 5 will come up against Tuggeranong for a place in the grand final this weekend. Tuggeranong beat University of Canberra in extra time in the minor semi-final to qualify.
Division 6 are set to face ANU, who eliminated Brindabella in their match on Saturday.
The matches will take place at Hackett, with Division 6 starting at 12pm and Division 5 at 2.30pm.
