Recently staff at Gunning Community Care (GCC) identified an issue with one of their clients who happened to be a veteran and contacted the Gunning chapter of the Yass sub-Branch of the RSL. As a result a load of wood was purchased for the veteran.

President of the Yass RSL sub-Branch, Neil Turner emphasised that the RSL, while it has a very important commemorative role, is clearly focussed on the welfare of our veterans. Veterans do not have to belong to the RSL to seek its aid with entitlements or other assistance. The RSL stands ready to provide a fitting part of a funeral service for a veteran who has passed away and to assist with accessing any entitlements for which the bereaved family may be eligible.
That the RSL could provide assistance was due in no small part to the generosity of residents in Gunning and Dalton who support fundraising endeavours for Anzac Day and Poppy Day. What a great co-operative effort!
About fifty district people crowded into the Royal Dalton Hotel on Monday morning to hear the latest news on how mobile phone and internet connections in and around Dalton, are to be improved.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor, Federal Assistant Minister for Communications Paul Fletcher, Telstra's Chris Taylor and NSW Member for Goulburn Pru Goward spoke.
In Dalton at the moment there is a new mini ‘tower’ that gives 4G service up to about 200m from its source including at the pub and school. Comments from those assembled pointed to less service for some village people since it had been introduced.
Dalton is to get one of the eighteen new towers for the Hume electorate over the next three years, funded by federal and NSW governments and Telstra. Despite the good news being shared at this session, there were still considerable rumbles of discontent over the continued delay of three years for the new tower with its placement still a matter for consultation. A new satellite will be launched in October that should cover those the tower will not service.
Like the hair shampoo advert said “It won’t happen overnight but it will happen”. Not soon enough for some it would seem.
Recently a number of district people met to discuss various options on how to fund the construction of the planned Independent Living Units on Biala Street, Gunning. Guest speaker Max Keith gave an impassioned address on how the retirement facility in Taralga was financed and built and how this could relate to the Gunning project.
Some of the district gardens open to the public on Saturday September 12, will collect donations towards this important project.
Five students from Gunning Public School competed at the Regional Athletics Carnival held at the AIS in Canberra recently. They were Elijah Wilson, Breea Waters, Rubin Lees, Milly Guilfoyle and Jake Waters.
Breea, Rubin, Milly and Jake won the PP5 (Small Schools) 4 X 100M relay on overall times and have now qualified for the State Carnival in Sydney in October. Well done to all five students and the best of luck in Sydney for the relay team!
