Saturday started positively for the Redbacks in Hackett, with youngster Bradley Neilson scoring midway through the first half against ANU.
The game remained close until it was blown wide-open in the second half. A good piece of play between Jim Burleigh, Oliver Watson, Jarrad Porter and Mitch Darmody led to Simon Geraghty latching on to a chance and burying it into the back of the net.
It was the nail in the coffin for the university side, which wasn't able to get any go forward and was kept scoreless.
It was the positive start that Yass needed, but it didn't seem to help them in the second game.
The Redbacks were playing well below their best while Tuggeranong lifted for the occasion.
Despite this, Yass' defence was strong enough to hold the opposition out for most of the game. Then, with 15 minutes left in the second half a controversial decision gave Tuggeranong a chance from the penalty spot.
Goalkeeper Rex Stacey, who was later named Players' Player, guessed right, but the ball just got passed him and Yass fell behind.
In the ensuing 15 minutes Yass didn't go close to levelling the score and was bundled out of the competition.
Coach Gary Lennon said he expected to have more trouble in the division six match than the division five game.
"I was worried about that division six game but I really thought we'd get through the division five game - turns out it went the other way," he said.
"ANU played much worse than I thought they could and Tuggeranong played better than I thought they would."
He said it was "a big shame" both teams didn't get through but he was excited about his second grade side's chances.
"We're coming up against the undefeated Gungahlin side with a new game plan than the one that didn't work last week, I really think we can stick it to them.
"We're the underdogs and we've got nothing to lose, I think Gungahlin has everything to lose."
The match is on at 12pm at the AIS and the boys would appreciate any support.
The Division 4 Ladies Redbacks had a strong 2-1 win over Belnorth in their semi-final.
Coach Kath Farnell said the game could have gone either way.
"All the team played amazing, pulling together for another fantastic combined effort," she told the Tribune.
Goalscorers for Yass were Annie Hill and Ashley Parker.
Meanwhile, Division 3 was beaten well by an undefeated Belnorth side. The 4-0 loss was a positive one though, as the Canberra side hasn't gone close to losing all year.
Division 4 will come up against ANU in the grand final at 2.30pm on Sunday at the AIS Grass Fields.
