The Yass Redbacks Women’s Division Four side on Sunday completed a remarkable turnaround with a 2-0 grand final victory over minor premier ANU.
First half goals to Shannon Wright and Victory Alley set the underdogs up for victory before the visitors’ defence held firm to deny their opponents any chance of a comeback.
The triumph caps a stunning midseason turnaround for Kath Farnell’s team. Inconsistent early season form relegated Yass to seventh position on the ladder after 11 weeks.
From there, the premiership charge began. The Redbacks scored ten consecutive wins, including a club record 18-0 hiding, to earn a finals berth. They did this despite the loss of Amalie Birkhol, who'd scored 10 goals from 19 starts with the club.
“For most of the team, this was their first time playing in a women’s division,” Farnell explained.
“Pushing the nerves of playing against mature, experienced teams to the one side, the players accepted the challenge of achieving the ultimate goal of becoming premiers.”
Their winning streak continued beyond the end of the regular season.
The Redbacks scored a 2-1 preliminary final over Belnorth to book a place in the decider.
By the time Wright and Alley scored goals in the grand final, a once improbable premiership now seemed likely.
Yass held its nerve in the final 45 minutes to not only deny a desperate ANU silverware, but prevent from netting a single goal.
Farnell paid tribute to the side’s sponsors, in particular The Australian Hotel, Galutzi and Academy Fit, and the coaching staff Jodie Gallagher, Ingrid Davis and Teigan Farnell.
