Relay is a 24-hour event raising money for the Cancer Council, who conduct research in the hope of finding a cure for cancer.
Event coordinator Mandy Reed is excited about what this year's event will include.
“We have pancakes, barbecues, healthy ‘Jucie Lucie’ food and drinks, fruit, soups and real coffee for 24 hours until 10am on Sunday. We also have children’s activities from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Included in this, at 2pm, is the children’s fancy dress parade and this year it is titled ‘Something out of a movie that has the ocean in it’,” she said.
“There will be prizes for the best dressed girl and boy. For the first time we have a Health Expo run by the Cancer Council. This will be held in the centre of the showground and will have health checks, masseuses, a stall and lots more. There will be entertainment all weekend, too.
This year’s theme is ‘Cruise’ – so we will judge the best dressed ‘cruise’ theme tent and the adults fancy dress (at 8pm Saturday night) is ‘Cruise’ theme also. Miss Relay Pageant is at 10pm so get your frocks out boys.”
Each year over 40,000 people take part in Relay For Life events across NSW. Relay For Life is a fun, outdoor and overnight fundraising event where teams of 10 to 15 people take turns to walk around a local oval.
“Relay For Life is rapidly becoming an important and welcome fixture on the Yass social calendar,” said Relay For Life event coordinator Debra O’Neil.
“The volunteer committee and I are really looking forward to working with the people of Yass to put on another uplifting and successful event for our community.”
Ms Reed said that before the region lost community figure Kim Nelson, he approached her to ask if he could help organise the entertainment for the Relay.
“He was going to get the amazingly talented members of YASSarts to perform. We are very proud to be able to say that YASSarts are going to be performing a tribute to Kim Nelson from about 4-7pm on Saturday evening,” she continued.
