A string of new free trade deals, culminating in last week's long-awaited 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, are bringing down barriers to markets across Asia and the Pacific. Coupled with a weak Aussie dollar, the deals are fuelling hopes of a new boom in wine exports.

After a decade of stagnant international sales, things are finally looking up.

"There's a slow return to optimism," Tim Kirk, chief winemaker of the award-winning, family-owned Clonakilla Wines in NSW, says.

"There's a significant rekindling of interest in premium Australian wine that I'm personally very encouraged by."

The value of Australian wine exports rose 5 per cent last financial year to $1.89 billion – the first such rise in nine years. Volumes rose 4 per cent to 724 million litres – the first rise in four years.

That result was largely attributed to a rapidly growing appetite for Australian wine in Asia. Wine Australia says the trade deals with South Korea and Japan have helped drive growth in those markets.

The industry expects a similar boost in exports to China when politicians stop bickering and eventually ratify that deal.

And now there's the TPP.

When the ambitious new pact comes into force, Canada – one of Australia's biggest wine export markets, worth $174 million in 2014 – will immediately scrap its tariffs.

Malaysia, Vietnam, Mexico and Peru will phase out their tariffs in the coming years, providing potential new markets.

Marita Corra, of export company Inland Trading, which helps supply premium Australian and New Zealand wines throughout the world, says her business is already booming.

"We're running out of stock, we can't keep up," she said. 

Ms Corra says the weak dollar has been a key driver but the tariff reductions will help insulate the industry when the currency inevitably strengthens.

The weak dollar is also proving enticing to United States' buyers. Wine exports to the US dropped off sharply after the global financial crisis but that now appears to be changing.

Clonakilla pulled out of the US several years ago.

"But just today we received our first order for three pallets of wine to go back into the US, into New York," Kirk says.

"Not huge volumes yet but it's significant."
