Another week gone and another month almost gone. How quickly the time passes, even when you aren't having fun. I can remember in my very youthful years crossing the days off the calendar in anticipation of the holidays and now I wish I could paste them back on again.

A real reminder of the passing of time is the 50th anniversary of the Shine Shield this week. Win Zipfell and I were the first caretakers of the local pool and a very constant visitor to the pool was Buster Shine. It was then that the idea of an intertown swimming competition was first proposed with Buster offering to donate the trophy. I can't think of many who were adults involved in the pool and the carnivals at that time who are still around. We will see who is able to turn up at the celebrations to be held on Saturday. Win does not enjoy good health these days but I really hope she can attend the event. I believe Jan Giles received applause at the Jugiong Carnival for her record - she swam in the very first Shine Shield and now will swim in the 50th. We aren't at all surprised, we all know how capable Jan is. I doubt if that achievement will be challenged.
Games and a barbecue will commence at 3pm followed by the official cutting of the cake at 4.30pm and the swimming will start at 5pm.
School kids return this week so there will probably be a few tears and a few pinched toes after six weeks of thongs or bare feet. I really feel for them when I see them decked out in new shoes.
The dry weather continues. A bit of noise and lightning last week offered the prospect of some rain but that passed with probably not more than two spots. A few showers a day or so later accounted for about 15mms. However, Zoe Giles' parents, Arnie and Ruth Pfitzner, who have travelled 900kms from Naracoorte in South Australia, said that the extended area around here is the best they have seen. South Australia has been experiencing drought for ages so no wonder they thought this area was looking pretty good.
The conditions for the golfers heated up on Sunday afternoon but the chicken pursuit continued. John Lee and Chris Glover continued their winning ways with John claiming the handicap trophy and Chris the putting trophy. As a bit of a novelty, they had a random draw for partners at the end of the game and the burglars there were John Lee and Tommy Glover, and the runners up were Tony Barton and Wayne Trethowan.
Marilyn Garry's number came up in the membership draw but remained unclaimed so will jackpot another $50 next week.
After all those months in hospital, Percy (Wayne Perceval) is home. The family has thanked everyone who offered love and support during his hospital stay.
Until next time.
