According to the Yass Valley Council’s Director of Planning and Environmental Services, Chris Berry, the DA’s were lodged following the controversial application for a Truck Depot at Carrington Road in Wallaroo.
The Wallaroo DA was approved in October 2015 following multiple deferrals by councillors. The main argument for rejecting the application related to the development of a Truck Depot creating a precedent that the Yass Valley would be regarded as an industrial area for the ACT.
Mr Berry said the proponents of both DA’s have been operating without approval for sometime.
“They want to formalise what they are already doing on the site, it is already being used as a truck depot,” he said.
One DA requires housing for three trucks, with 12 heavy vehicle movements each day, plus the operator's personal vehicles. The second DA refers to both heavy and light vehicles including two trucks, giving an average of 10 vehicle movements a day.
“These have been operating for some time and it was when we did the Carrington Road investigation they came up as not having approval,” Mr Berry continued.
“It’s not surprising that both DA’s came from the same road, we did a very in-depth investigation of the area.”
Both DA’s were up on public exhibition over the Christmas period and three submissions were made.
“There were three opposing submissions for both DA’s, which isn’t surprising being that they are both on the same road,” he continued.
Mr Berry is expecting similar discussions about these DA’s to the application at Wallaroo.
Councillors heard from neighbouring landowners regarding the Carrington Road DA, echoing concerns about the environment and surrounding roads.
While the environmental and road impacts are yet to be fully investigated, Mr Berry said that he can understand people wanting to operate their small business from home.
“With heavy vehicles and equipment there are a lot of costs attached to it. I know a lot of people want to see them close to where they live rather than at a depot where they have to put their own security around.”
Both applications will be discussed at a future council meeting.
