It was a memorable weekend of cricket for big hitter Nick Pollack who belted back-to-back match winning performances.
Pollack hit 44 runs in the Pirate’s decimation of Boorowa in round 12 of the Triggs Shield on Saturday. He then followed it up with a well-crafted 81 for Yass in the representative side’s nail-biting win against Wagga in the Stribley Shield final on Sunday.
Pollack combined with Matt Lawrence, who top scored on 56, to lead the Pirates to a total of 222 for just five wickets at Victoria Park. Shaun Davis (34), Ant Broers (27) and Adam Forth (27) also contributed to the innings.
It was too big a task for the Boorowa batsmen who stumbled miserably from the outset. As wickets fell like ninepins, Anthony McMahon was the only one to reach the twenties (21) and the side was bowled out for a paltry 61 runs in the 18th over.
Matt Lawrence continued to wreak havoc, this time with the ball, claiming five scalps for 17 runs. Alex Waters and Andrew Holgate each contributed two wickets for the Pirates.
Also on Saturday in A grade, the Soldiers Club Snipers posted a more than respectable total of 171 from 44.5 overs but still fell short in their match against the Bowning Buffaloes.
Andrew Swaffield was the star of the show for the Buffaloes with a knock of 52 runs following on from the solid foundation laid by openers Dave Brown (29) and Brett Newman (22).
The Buffaloes chased down their target in the 42nd over with three wickets to spare.
At Harden, the home side went down to the Yass Golf Club, which proved too strong after setting the target at 182 runs. Opening batsman Chris Doyle made a half century for the Golf Club with contributions from Phil Sparnon (21) and Daniel Poidevin (17).
Daniel Kemp did the most damage with the ball with figures of 3/33.
In the Sweeney Cup, the Yass Golf Club Taipans won the toss and elected to bat against competition leaders Murrumbateman on their home turf on Saturday.
The Taipans were all out in the 40th over with a total of 126 in the score book. Adrian Waters (43), Dylan Percival (28) and Paul Barnes (25) were the best performers.
The main destroyer for the home team was again Wayne McIllhatton with four wickets and Terry Tillyard also produced three.
Murrumbateman aggressively chased the small total and passed it easily in the 19th over, with only two wickets down. Andrew Clarke (54 no) and James Gray (51 no) combined for the match winning partnership.
In the other B grade game, Harden went down to the Dalton Dingoes in a low-scoring affair. The Boorowa Cricket Club defeated Binalong and the Royal Pirates triumphed over the Soldiers Club Horns in the two C grade fixtures.
On Sunday, Yass capped off the weekend by claiming its eighth Stribley Shield in the representative final against Wagga at Robertson Oval.
It was the seventh time in the last 10 years that Yass has won the competition and the third time they’ve beaten Wagga at its home ground in a decider.
