Police say the driver from Tumut incredibly freed himself from the truck and was conveyed to Canberra Hospital suffering severe injuries to his lower right leg. A nurse travelling in the opposite direction pulled over to render assistance.
Fire and Rescue teams from Yass, Goulburn and Harden were called to the scene of the accident, which occurred just west of Yass on the Hume Highway at about 11am on Monday, February 29.
Fire and Rescue deputy captain Scott Lang told the Yass Tribune on the scene that he was unsure of how the accident had occurred but that approximately 600 litres of fuel had been spilled in the rollover.
A specialist Hazmat team from Goulburn is en route to help decant the fuel and clean up the site. Mr Lang said emergency services will be on hand for a while yet performing vehicle recovery.
"We are waiting on a specialist Hazmat appliance from Goulburn to come down and give us a hand to decant what is left [of the diesel] and do a vehicle recovery with the assistance of the contractors...so we will be here for some-time until we can...flip the truck back over, clean up what is left and hand it back to the Rural Fire Service," Mr Lang said.
Traffic has been slowed in the area but one lane of the highway remains open.
Police are still investigating, however on scene, it appeared as though the trucks right front wheel had blown out and forced the vehicle from the road, taking out approximately 50 meters of the guard rail.
