An innovative steel truss bridge, similar to a Bailey Bridge, has been installed over Dicks Creek, at Nanima just outside of Murrumbateman. This bridge will be a temporary crossing while a permanent bridge is constructed on the existing timber bridge alignment. Truss bridges are often used by the Australian Defence Forces as a quick and temporary creek crossing.

“Due to safety concerns Council had to impose a 5 tonne load limit on the old timber bridge at DicksCreek. We are aware of the inconvenience this caused to residents and businesses in the area,” said Yass Valley Council Director of Engineering, Gary Chapman. “A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to have this bridge constructed and it will allow minimal disruption to locals while a new concrete bridge is constructed to replace the old bridge.”
“Timber bridges are an enormous issue for rural councils across the country and unfortunately bridges are not cheap to replace,” said Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey. “Council was fortunate to receive $723,000 in funding from the Federal Government in Round Two of the Bridges Renewal Program, which will cover half the cost of the replacement bridge at Dicks Creek.”
“Yass Valley had 18 timber bridges which were flagged for eventual replacement. So far work has been completed on Bango Lane and Burrinjuck Road bridges, six heavy vehicle bypasses have been constructed, a box culvert bridge has been installed on Gums Lane and the relocatable steel truss bridge over Dicks Creek has been put in place,” said Mr Chapman.
“Construction of a replacement, concrete bridge at Dicks Creek will commence in August 2016,” said Mr Chapman. “Once this construction is completed, the relocatable steel bridge will be removed and used at our next bridge project on Yass River Road (Walmsley Bridge).”
