Scores of kids took the opportunity to climb aboard the big red fire truck and meet the men and women who work hard to keep them safe.
Yass Fire and Rescue NSW Captain, Paul Hewett, said about 500 people visited the station on Saturday for one of the biggest open days held in Yass.
“It was one of the biggest showings we have had in the last few years,” he said.
“It was nice weather and there were lots of people about.”
The local fire station in Meehan Street hosted demonstrations, station tours, a sausage sizzle, face painting and presented excited children with a pack to take home that included an activity booklet, special LEGO City mini-figures and important fire safety messages.
“It was nice to be able to give the community an idea of what we do and the tools we use,” Mr Hewett said.
“As per usual, we had lots of kids in and out of the trucks, which is always a big thrill.
“We also had lots of interest for recruitment, which is great because we are looking at filling a few more spots.”
The open day is a chance for the community to come inside the doors of the local fire station and see firsthand what unfolds while also taking on board important information about fire safety in the home and office. Open days were held simultaneously at every fire station in NSW on Saturday.
“It’s a chance for us to have fun with the kids and to chat to the general public rather than just always disappearing down the street in the fire truck,” Mr Hewett said.
