Now her outstanding commitment and passion has been recognised with the Teaching Excellence Award at TAFE Illawarra’s prestigious Annual Awards.
While her excellence is obvious to her students, colleagues and community, Cheryl says she was surprised to receive the award.
“I was shocked! It’s such an honour.”
When asked what it is that keeps her passion for teaching alive, she says: “It’s the privilege of being part of someone’s learning journey. Helping someone to reach their goals and create a better future for themselves is so rewarding.”
Having also worked as a teacher in schools, Cheryl says it’s also TAFE Illawarra’s learning environment that keeps her motivated.
“We are fortunate to have a unique and diverse environment at TAFE Illawarra. We have students from all walks of life and deliver training in a way that’s tailored to their individual learning style.
“I love the challenging nature of finding different teaching methods to meet someone’s needs.”
As a Yass local, Cheryl says teaching also provides her with a connection to the community.
“I love helping local students grow personally and professionally. It’s great for the individual and for our region.”
With her years of experience, Cheryl is source of sound advice for those considering studying.
“For first-time students, it’s about finding something you’re good at and interested in doing. Focus on your strengths. And whatever you start, be committed – follow it right through to the end.
“For everyone else, it’s never too late to learn or change the direction of your life. Learning is a lifelong journey.”
Cheryl is now encouraging the community to explore their study options and enrol in a course that could change their lives at Choices Day on Saturday 4 June, 9am to 12pm, at TAFE Illawarra’s Yass, Queanbeyan and Cooma campuses.
The day provides people with an opportunity to find out what’s on offer in Semester 2, 2016, seek advice on the best course for their career goals, find out about fee-free study options and enrol. Enrolments also open online on Saturday 4 June at www.tafeillawarra.edu.au.
