This year, more than 170 land holdings participated in the Yass/Gunning group fox control program as part of South East Local Land Services Feral Fighters autumn campaign.
In excess of 5,500 fox baits were issued over a period of four days from May 10-14, which is an outstanding achievement.
This follows along similar lines to a program that has been underway in the Boorowa area for many years.
Gunning District Landcare was instrumental in publicising the autumn program and attracting many new participants.
Volunteer group organisers across the region worked tirelessly to gather bait orders and remind participants within their local groups of collection times.
As part of the autumn campaign, South East Local Land Services held two 1080/Pindone training courses at the Upper Lachlan Shire Council’s Gunning office.
Thirty-five land managers participated in the course to attain certification to use 1080 and Pindone baits for pest animal control on their properties.
The three-hour course covers topics such as baiting techniques, toxicity, storage, transport, and legal obligations. A certification card is issued to participants on course completion and they will remain accredited to use 1080 and Pindone for five years.
South East Local Land Services will soon ask Feral Fighters participants to complete a short electronic survey. Feedback is sought on how the program was run and the results from individual baiting. This important information will assist Local Land Services to identify areas of improvements and any changes that may need to be made to the program to ensure continued success in the future.
