The muddy conditions made for a rather unsteady start for the Reds and the side couldn’t seem to get a grip on possession in the opening stanza.
Neither side were making great inroads in attack in the first half only managing one shot on target each, and of those two shots it was City’s that counted.
A lapse in communication from the Reds at a corner left a City player with a free header at the front post.
Yass was left to find an equaliser and it wasn’t long before the Reds attack created its best chance against the City defence when Brendan ‘The Righty’ Scanes was put through on goal only to be foiled by the City keeper.
The sides went to oranges 1-nil to City
The second half saw Yass take the downhill slope advantage but it didn’t seem to make much difference with both teams still struggling to create any chances.
Yass’s midfield and attack were having a lacklustre day out. Brad “Boy Scout” Nielson was looking most dangerous with his runs down the left wing creating the most chances for Yass to find an equaliser.
Sadly, it proved a harder task to achieve for Yass and Canberra City held on to its 1-nil lead to get the victory over the dejected Yass side.
“Our boys seemed to struggle today,” Grant ‘Veteran’ Taylor said.
“I think we missed a few chances that, on another day, would have ended up in the back of the net and it really weighed on the lads.”
“City had done its homework and we couldn’t adapt well enough,” coach John Mannweiler said. “It’s the business end of the season now and we can’t really afford to drop points like today.”
Players player went to Jarrod ‘the Sniper’ Porter for taking up Mitchell ‘the General’ Darmody’s position in the midfield and having a decent go at it.
Special mention for Brad ‘the Boy Scout’ because it was his birthday. He also may have had a decent game. Who knows?
Yass Division 4 had the bye on the weekend.
The Yass boys will be taking on Canberra Olympic this weekend at Walker Park with games at 1pm and 3pm.
