The Gungahlin team was out for revenge after the 5-1 drumming Yass gave them at Walker park earlier in the season.
Although beginning well, Yass found themselves trailing the Gungahlin ladies inside the first five minutes, when a long shot from the Gungahlin forward line was fumbled across the line, slipping through Yass keeper, Georgia Allen's’ hands.
The ladies set about turning the tide through some great midfield work from Dani ‘Flash’ Farthing and Jessica ‘Coleface’ Cole driving the girls forward. The next 30 minutes, the Reds seemed to be on top of Gungahlin. Searching for an equaliser and if not for a few controversial offside calls against the Reds, the girls may have found it.
Just before the end of the half, Gungahlin doubled their lead with a solid corner that was turned in at the front post, leaving the girls two down for the second half.
The girls showed renewed vigour as they stepped onto the field in the second half but the Gungahlin side came out firing and after 15 minutes, had added two more goals to their tally, both coming from Yass failing to clear from corners.
The Reds weren’t giving up so easy and before long, had clawed one back through leading goal scorer Victoria ‘Bulldog’ Alley, after slicing the ball across the goals from her striking partner Shannon ‘Lightfoot’ Wright and blasting it past the Gungahlin keeper into the side netting.
Yass was backed into its own half and in a profound move, coach ‘Fiery’ Farnell, decided to change tactics and move her two fastest players to the front. The gamble seemed to work and Yass was looking the goods with Bec ‘Machine’ McLean racing past defenders to the ball, but the Gungahlin goalkeeper was equal to the task and came out on top to keep the scores level. With 15 minutes left, the Reds were pushing forward and applying huge amounts of pressure to try and close the gap.
This led to the Gungahlin goalkeeper handling the ball outside of her 18 yard box, which gave Yass a valuable free kick on the edge of the area. Stepping to the mark, Jacinta ‘Jac-hammer’ Murphy, Yass’s Premier Recruit, who made it look easy firing into the top right and leaving the keeper rooted to the spot.
In the end, the whistle beat the Reds before they could turn the momentum into anymore goals.
Gungahlin had exacted vengeance at 4-2 at full time.
Players player went to Coleface, who was solid in the mids, yet Yolunda Heineman and the Jac-hammer were close contenders.
The Lady Redbacks will have a bye this week, resuming July 10 when they take on Belnorth at Walker Park.
