Under 6s were lucky enough to have the later game time today against Westies and this suited Seth Olah who starred crossing for 2 tries to continue his rich vein of form.
Under 7s
The Pateman Power Solutions under 7 Magpies drew one of the short straws and took to the field first this weekend to remove the frost for the other teams, racking up another win against the odds of hands and legs that didn’t want to do anything but go home to the warmth of their houses.
Not only did they win, but they also showed great sportsmanship by lending the Belconnen United Sharks White team two players so they could field 8 players. Logan Collins and Brodie Poidevin Warden were thankful to crawl out from under the blankets on the sideline to play, turning their jerseys inside and did not hold back against their teammates. Brodie put that much of an effort in he earned the Yass Outdoor Sports & Camping player of the week trophy.
George Foran was unstoppable this week with three tries off three hit-ups running straight through the opposition and down the field with speed. Sutherland Holliday topped the defence and ran in two tries, with Jack Ryan crossing for two as well. Jack Jamieson and Alex Bell also put in a great attack effort, each crossing for a try as well.
The cold weather got the best of some players who called it a day a little early and we were lucky to have our sit out for this week, Brock Lennon on the sideline with his gear underneath his warm clothes because he got to make an appearance. Takai Kristiansen Chatfield, William Hall, Kane Mitchell, Liam Beaten and Eli Cassidy all did their very best on the field in such icy conditions.
The final score was 36 – 28. This little team does nothing but make us proud week in and week out.
Under 8s
Sunday the Performance Windows Under 8s Magpies football team went up against the Valley Dragons (Silver) at home. The boys are playing really well as a team which is paying off, they just fell short of a win with the final score being 36 - 38. A hat trick of tries went to Jett McGrath, Cody Diamond with 2 tries and 1 each to Will Mihaljevic and Ryan Ings, and conversions by Cody Diamond, James Martens, Ryan Ings and Ben O’Brien. Well done boys!!!!!
Under 9s
Under 9s were another team that started first and after the first set of six the conditions were causing a major concern but this did not stop them trading tries with the strong opposition for the whole first half. 17 tries were scored with 9 conversions with Will Downey taking home the man of the match trophy this week for his defence and long distance try.
Other try scorers included Thomas Jamieson, Kyle Shoard, Oscar Sargeant and Connor Shepherd.
Goals converted by Sean Bell, Baxtow Lane, Kyle Shoard and Connor Shepherd.
Under 10s
Last week our Amaroo Coloured Wool Under 10s took on the Belconnen United Sharks at Walker Park.
Tony Davis, Noah Collins, Dane Howard, Jack Collins and Kyle Lenon all racked up the tackles.
Brad Barber, Lucas McPherson, Josh Barry, Jazz Carey and Riley Bateup played well in both attack and defence.
The final score was Sharks 8 – Yass 6 with a try to Josh Barry and a goal to Lucas McPherson.
Under 11s
The Yass Under 11 Hi Way Motor Inn boys put in a big team effort at home last weekend against a very well drilled Woden Weston side, at a very icy Jim Beck Oval.
All the boys had great games and should be most proud of their efforts. This game was definitely our hardest game of the season, so we will use this as our yardstick for the remaining games this year.
Once again we seen Noah topping the tackle count with 13 tackles, closely followed by Daniel with 12 and Lane with 11, however I must say that Timmy completed 9 tackles and only played the first half. Joseph, Damon, Coby, Billie closely followed.
Well done boys.
In attack, Daniel put in 12 good runs, scoring a try, and Lane was once again dominant with 16 strong hit ups coming away with one try as well. Joseph has some good runs in attack as did Luke. Well done.
The only conversion of the game went to Cameron, who never seems to miss. Well done Cam, all the practising is paying off.
At the final whistle, Yass went down by 38 to 10.
This was a hard game for the boys, but one in which we will learn from, but most of all, they should be proud of their efforts.
Under 13s
YMRL Under 13s Sponsored by Chris and Mell Beck Tree Removalists - go down 24-20 to Tuggeranong Buffaloes after making second half comeback at frosty Walker Park on Sunday.
In the biggest frost of the year the Magpies struggled to warm up losing the first half, four tries to one, but made a major comeback in the second half to narrowly go down five tries to four.
The Magpies were slow to get away, but were led by the middle forwards of Declan Barry, Harvey Blackmore and Braith Ironside with support from Kane Dowling, laying a platform on the back of some very good edge running by Ryan Prins and Kyle Jenkins. Both Kyle and Ryan were very strong for the Magpies in the frosty conditions.
The game was a story of two halves, with the Buffaloes dominating the first half, scoring four tries while having double the possession to the Magpies. The Magpies scored their only try in the half, after receiving a penalty for back to back sets, a good scoot from the dummy half Sam Clark, the conversion was successful by centre Jack Callaughan for the Magpies to go to halftime down 20 – 6.
The second half by the Magpies was a vast improvement in defence, enabling them to dominate possession scoring three tries to one, fullback Patrick McPhillips, and centre Jack Callaughan proving a handful for the Buffaloes defence, both scoring tries, while dummy half Sam Clark, scored his second try after great lead up work by halfback Josh Sykes. The outside backs for Yass, Reece Bush, Charlie Beck, Angus Gallahar, Bailey Rummery and Caleb Davis provided good support all day.
The U13 Magpies are still missing forwards Thomas Bell and Tyson Carey due to injury, hoping they will be fit to return post the school holidays.
The final score Yass Magpies 20 defeated by Tuggeranong Buffaloes 24
Tries- Sam Clark 2, Patrick McPhillips 1, Jack Callaughan 1.
Goals – Jack Callaughan 2.
The Chris and Mell Beck Tree Removals player of the match went to Declan Barry.
Under 14s
Bezzy's garden maintenance U14's played Belconnen Sharks at home this weekend to gain a 26-0 win.
It was a great game where the whole team put in an astounding effort.
The forwards played strong all game and the defensive effort right across the field was tremendous, it wasn't broken once.
An excellent run from Will Pettigrew where while being tackled, he dragged 5 of the opposing team with him for several metres.
Yass was attacking the Belconnen Sharks try line all match and this resulted with try's from Riley Timmer, Jayden, Jason and Michael and 3 conversions from Tom Roberts.
Under 16s
Last Friday night saw the Yass Aussie Home Loans Under 16s take on the Belconnen United Sharks at Walker Park in frigid conditions.
Yass got off to a good start, scoring within the first five minutes.
Jayden Perceval, Hayden Puckett and Lachi Davis were great in defence.
Toby Callaughan, Richi Maher and Tyson Ings worked well in attack.
As usual, Bailey Pennell, Jackson Paton, Blake Watson and Tyler Waters were outstanding in both attack and defence.
At halftime the score was Yass 18 – Sharks 4.
Our boys then ran away with the game in the second half scoring a further six tries.
The final score was Yass 54 – Sharks 4 with play halted at the 50 minute mark due to the “mercy” ruling. Tries going to Jayden Perceval, Richi Maher, Cian Ebert, Hayden Puckett, Bailey Pennell, Blake Watson, Will Goode and two tries to Jackson Paton. Nine goals to Jayden Perceval. Players’ Player, this week, went to Jackson Paton.
After the holiday break the boys take on South Tuggeranong at Walker Park on 22 July. Please come up and cheer them on.
Under 18s Girls
The Bello Mobile Beauty sponsored under18's played the Belconnen Sharks on Friday night.
Playing in the rain one could expect Yass to revert to there one out tactics but spectators were treated to a ball movement spectacle that tore the defence to shreds.
Countless time the girls would chain pass through 3 and 4 sets of hands to a runner hitting a hole and countless metres being made each time.
The girls are showing they are learning and this game was evidence of growing confidence.
Tayla Chapman’s hard running a highlight and at times she could not be handled by the defence.
Shannon Wright’s playmaking ability was on show throughout and if more effective when runners hit gaps like they were and Logan Davis must have enjoyed running into spaces not faces this week.
3 points went to Bek Hartwig who enjoys mixing it up in the middle of the field and Shannon Wright collected the 2 points with the 1point being shared between Tyhan Bell, Tayla Chapman, Caitlyn Douven, Genna Elliot and Tara Friend.
Shannon Wright scored 4 tries and 6 goals Caitlyn Douven scored 2 tries and sister Maddison couldn't be out done scoring two tries of her own. Tayla Chapman and Bek Hartwig scored one try each Sarah Robinson also had a wonderful game.
Now a 3 week break.
