On the weekend of June 5 and 6, the Yass Scouts braved the cold and rain to host the 2016 Yass Master Campfire Chef Scout camp at Bowning. The Scout groups attending came from across the region and included Amaroo, Weston, Wells Station, Biralee, Gundaroo, Cootamundra, Warren and Cobargo. The camp was enjoyed by over 90 scouts and close to 30 Leaders, parents and helpers with the rain not deterring anyone from having fun.

The Master Campfire Chef Camp is a camp for the Scouts to learn about fire safety, navigation, cooking without recipes like the Mystery box challenge, camping, cultural diversity and making friends.
All the Scouts were divided into 13 Patrols (teams of Scouts) and had turns walking through the mud and rain to the activity bases over the weekend. Each Patrol had turns on the activity bases (11 in total), which included the Mystery Box challenge, A navigation course to find food to cook with, a vertical bungee cord to grab ingredients and an obstacle course over fallen trees and through tyres. They even attempted to build a camp kitchen from old timber branches and logs. The Scouts also learnt about different cultures through cooking different recipes from around the world and building and maintain a campfire which was challenging in the rain and cold.
The Scouts shared all of their cooking throughout the course of the weekend sharing all that they made in group meals which was a great way to meet new friends and have a laugh. The weather didn't stop anyone from having a great time especially on Sunday morning when the Scouts had to build their own camp fire in the rain to cook their breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages. Saturday night was a time of laughter and songs by the bonfire to keep warm with everyone getting involved and having a night to remember.
This camp is growing year by year almost doubling in size over the last 2 years, and is a credit to The Yass Scouts. A big thank you for Jenny Thompson and Don McCann who do so much organisation to make it happen, and also to the Leaders, Committee and Venturers from Yass and the other groups that helped supervise the Scouts and make it so much fun.
