It was a testament to the depth of the side this year that even with six changes to the team they were still able to dominate this match.
From the opening quarter, when the Roos kept Molonglo scoreless while adding six goals to their tally, it was clear this would be a one-sided contest.
Paul Willersdorf was a powerhouse in the centre, winning the hard ball gets and delivering plenty of attack. Molonglo rarely managed to get the ball into their fifty metre zone and the Roos defenders were well able to meet the challenge.
With 19 goals on the board, many players added to their personal tallies for the year. Ben Power, Vaughn Winnel and Sam Campbell picked up three each, Cam Attwell, Ben Serafin and Paul Willersdorf all managed two each while Damian Philippa, Ben Willersdorf, Daniel Smith and Heath Lowry got singles. Best players were Paul Willersdorf, Ben Power, Vaughn Winnel, Tom Hanson, Jon Randles and Brad Porter.
A couple of new transfers for the Roos are really starting to settle in and show they are very valuable assets.
Ben Power and Vaughn Winnel (both experienced players) are fast becoming key footballers and have consistently been in the best player lists since their recent additions to the team list. The team this year really has a solid base of seasoned players ably supported by an enthusiastic crop of younger players who are developing quickly.
This year’s competition has been just what the Roos needed to inspire their best. It is a good mix of teams to challenge the Roos to play different strategies to win. Coach Terry Lemon has attempted to get the players to think and play more as a team so they can maximise the advantages they have.
This can only work well if players train together and get to know each other and what they each can do.
As the Roos head towards finals it is time to take stock of player commitment to the team goals for season 2016. That goal of course is a second premiership flag and this team has shown that with a little more effort and dedication they have what it takes.
The coming weeks will require a full-on effort by all players as there are some tough matches before the finals and some players will be unavailable during this time. The Roos don’t want to ease the pressure in the crucial lead up to finals. Teams like ANU and Ainslie will jump on any small weakness and make the most of it.
This weekend the Roos will front up at Football Park in Phillip for a showdown with the Woden Blues. The match starts at 12pm on Saturday.
Despite an easy win for the Roos earlier in the season, this venue has not always suited the men from Yass. Woden at home will be a tougher prospect and the Roos cannot afford to slip up in this one.
I’ll see you at the footy. Go the Roos!
