Lane Gaudie has been playing well this year and he grabbed a try after a Dylan Arabin break and it was 10-6. However, the boys allowed the home side to score two unanswered tries to trail 18-10 at halftime. When play resumed, Condobolin scored again and behind by 3 converted tries the Calves had some work to do. However with some big efforts from Will Manwaring, Jeff Brown and Dylan Downey the Calves scraped home 24-22 to stay at the top of the ladder.
The Jersey Girls went out next into what turned out to be a dour struggle. Ten all at halftime Kayla Smith pushed hard to be the first team to strike back in the second half. Christie Johnson kept the ball moving all day and the standout player was Tara McGrath-West, Tara put in some remarkable defence but in the end Condobolin scored and the Jersey Girls lost 18-10. They retain fifth spot on the ladder a point ahead of Canowindra.
Only shaded by 12 points against Condo in round 3 at home, the Waldren Construction Brahmans may have thought that with some improved form last week, they may have been a chance at Pat Timmins Oval. But it was not to be, going down 50-16 there were patches of play by the visitors that troubled the Rams. Half back Haydon Bee did not play but Tim Regan took over as number 7. James Blair was a welcome addition and played in the centres.
The usual pattern emerged and Condobolin went out to a 22-0 lead after 23 minutes. Drew Arabin kept defenders busy all day and James Blair was at his usual best and with 8 minutes of the half remaining Rod Freeman crossed for a try and it was 22-4 at the break. When the second stanza got under way, the Brahmans held the hosts out for 10 long minutes in some end to end play. But a very mobile Rams prop ran straight through the defence for 68 metres to score under the sticks.
In the seventeenth minute, after pressing the Rams line Tom Johnson forced his way over the goal line and Tim Regan converted for 28-10. Tension started to build in the second half and an all-in melee erupted after Tim Regan copped a pair of knees in the back. Referee Purdie had to stop play several times as the ill feeling lingered. In the 31st minute both Tom Johnson and the Condo halfback were sent to the bin after another incident.
Down to 12 a side, Binalong forced a dropout following a grubber by Drew Arabin into the in goal. However the home side had piled on a lead of 34 points and struck again to go 50-10 up. It was a game characterised by some very heavy body contact and Binalong gave as good as they got. Dylan Arabin got the final points of the game by converting his own try to see the final score of 50-16.
In other results, Trundle flattened Peak Hill 50-10, Cargo defeated Eugowra 54-24, Canowindra 28 def Burrangong 14 and Manildra were too good for Grenfell 42-14. Next week Binalong will be at home against Grenfell prior to their Brahman’s Ball on Saturday night.
