Yass Police placed majority of its resources on proactive measures to ensure the safety of the public, after the Yass Valley was batter with heavy rain on Wednesday. Police reported no dangerous driving and that residents have followed the State Emergency Services advice correctly.
Compliance to this advice was due to the Roads and Maritime Services placing effective measures in place - closing roads and alerting the public of possible hazardous areas. A report of a motorist who drove over mud in Wee Jasper and eventually became stranded after the car was bogged. The vehicle was recovered and the driver was uninjured.
Police remind road users about being aware of slippery surfaces affected by rain and debris. Flooded roads does not have to be sign posted to be unsafe and can also damage unseen road surfaces. SES advise never to drive, ride or walk through floodwater.
The deluge affected a number of roads in the Yass Valley Region, including the Barton Highway, which is being monitored by the RMS. Council confirmed the following road closures at the time of publication: Buckmusters Bridge, Yass River Road; Keirs Road, Murrumbateman; Cattle Street and Garryowen Road, Binalong; Fairy Hole Road, Yass; Stephen Street, Binalong; Armours Road, Binalong; Victoria Street, Sutton; Bendenine Road, Binalong; Greenwood Road, Murrumbateman; Nanima Road causeway, Nanima; Coolalie Road, Yass; Booths Crossing, Yass River Road; Yass Low Level; Tallagandra Lane and East Tallagandra Lane, Sutton; and Laverstock Road, Yass.
