Due to the size of the project, the upgrades will be broken into stages. The first stage will see new equestrian facilities constructed in a separate and secure area.
It includes 150m by 100m and 100m by 75m fenced arenas, 80m by 40m fenced sand arena and horse yards with a water and wash down area.
Provisions for a designated parking area, storage shed, clubhouse and amenities will also be included in this area in the future.
“This is great news for the Murrumbateman community and surrounding region,” Member for Goulburn Pru Goward said. “Currently, 20 active community groups and clubs utilise the one recreation ground with sporting clubs sharing the same field as the equestrian events, not ideal in any case.”
While funding is only available for the first stage of the development, Stage 2 will include upgrades to the sports field, that will be determined with the advisory committee.
The upgrades are designed to create a cohesive community facility, according to council’s General Manager David Rowe, who says it will bring ‘new opportunities’ to our region.
“It has been a long term dream for so many people involved in this project over a number of years, it is fantastic to finally see the project take a major step forward,” he said.
A draft plan of management has been circulated to Murrumbateman and councillor elect Mike Reid says it has received wide support.
“The plan also aims to improve infrastructure for our popular community markets and Field Days, as well as improve sporting facilities for indoor netball or basketball. We are looking forward to seeing this master plan take on a ‘concrete’ form,” Cr Reid said.
The adopted plan will form part of the plan of management for the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds. Yass Valley Council said its approved “shovel ready” plan, will allow the committee and council to apply for future grant funding to further enhance the facility.
