The new Yass Valley Council met for the first time on Wednesday evening to be sworn in. The first point of order was to elect a Mayor and Deputy, Cr Rowena Abbey emerged as favourite for Mayor and Cr Kim Turner as Deputy.

Council provisions and expenses was discussed at length with Crs Jasmin Jones and Geoff Frost motioning an additional $500 for childcare, on top of the $3000 maximum reimbursements payable.
Cr Jones says by not adopting the the increase it portrays council as ‘anti-family’. Cr McManus spoke against the proposed increase of 20 per cent, that minimal increases [around 2 per cent] the Remuneration Tribunal hands down be adopted. Cr Jones motion was lost two to seven.
Council meeting times was also tabled, Cr Jones speaking for a 5pm start allowing better accessibility, Cr McManus spoke against the motion arguing late evenings leads to bad business decisions. The motion was lost four to five votes and meetings will resume at 4pm.
