Twenty-nine year-old David Barrie, who grew up and still resides in Yass, will to represent the nation – the only Aussie – on Saturday, November 19 where he will take part in swimwear, sports and suit categories.
I’d like to use the experience to launch a mentoring and workshop program related to personal development in health and fitness.
- David Barrie
Asked about his chances of winning, he said he expected to do well.
“I think I’ll go very well, but it would be tough because it’s all very subjective. And there’s competition from all over the world, obviously,” Mr Barrie said.
His desire to compete in the US comes after his triumph in the Model Australia Championships at the Musclemania Australia Championships on the Gold Coast in mid September 2016.
If he wins, he said he already knows what to do next.
“I will be shooting [cover photos] with the likes of Iron Man Magazine and will unleash my enterprise in personal development.”
He said “while it would be good to win, I’d like to use the experience to launch a mentoring and workshop program related to personal development in health and fitness”.
“It would be a program implemented in schools and communities across the country to help people develop their bodies, minds and spirits. They’ll learn discipline in training and maintaining all three,” he said.
Mr Barrie said the experience in the US competition will give him more exposure and to work with the best to help him achieve his developmental program.
“I may win some petty cash, but it’s not about the money. It’s about gaining influence and a track record of developing myself.”
He said that needs to come first before he can help others develop themselves.
Mr Barrie has devoted the past 12 years of his life to fitness and sports modelling, beginning at age 17.
He said his aspiration is to combine his teaching degree with his health and fitness endeavours.
“It’s been my childhood vision.”
