“I don’t drink or smoke, I drink only water and sometimes tea,” she said.
Ms Styles also credits her attitude of never giving up. Ms Styles, in her younger days, was a nurse at the Yass District Hospital. Those who attended Ms Styles’ birthday were her daughters: Judy Sime and Helen Jamseson, who travelled from Castlemaine and Dubbo. Ms Sime said her mother had always been health conscious.
“Mum was very keen on vegetables. We had our own cows on the property so we’ve always had raw milk,” she said.
Ms Jamseson said they also made their own butter, so “it was very organic because we separated the cream”. For now, Ms Styles said she remained content and wants only the simple things in life. “There’s nothing much I want to do now, only rest and have afternoon tea,” she said.
Ceremony for former Nashos
At 10.00 hours on Sunday, February 19, the South West Slopes sub-Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association and Affiliates Inc. will conduct a memorial ceremony at the Yass Ex-Services Memorial.
The ceremony is to remember thousands of former local and other Australian National Servicemen who provided such vital protection in the three defence forces during the two main induction periods and their additional years in the reserve forces, which covered a span between 1951 and 1972.
Many ‘Nashos’ were killed and injured during their obligatory service; some in Vietnam and Malayan combat zones, others while training in establishments throughout Australia. The February service hopes to combine South West Slopes members with local former National Servicemen plus other ex-service personnel in a ceremony for Nashos not seen in Yass for quite some years. All are invited to attend and participate.
At the conclusion of the service, a monthly meeting of the South West Slopes sub-Branch has been arranged to be held in the Yass Soldiers Club.
