A new initiative in 2017 is the jockeys’ winning bonuses. It will also be offered at the Boorowa Picnic Races on May 6. The three most successful jockeys on each race day will receive $450, $200 and $100 each, respectively. The most successful over the two days will receive an extra $500. Matt Merriman, Yass Picnic Race Club, said the initiative has increased the prize monies from $6000 to $23,500.
“The trainers are really pleased that we're making effort to try to encourage young jockeys and more trainers and horses from the increased in the prize monies,” Merriman said.
As with the 2016 event, six races are scheduled with a total of 50 entries. Two jockeys, Ricky Blewitt and Samara Johnson, and one trainer, Trevor Sutherland, are set to race in all six races.
