It was a captain’s knock with the bat and ball that helped the Yass Golf Club (YGC) Snipers score a major victory against the YGC Piranhas, who finished minor premiers, in the Yass semi-final derby.

Under fine weather conditions at Victoria Park on February 25, David Field picked up 3/14, assisting Craig Irwin’s top performance of 4/15, to dismiss the Piranhas for 104 in 41 overs—the only resistance came from Robert Field’s 51 runs.
In reply, the Snipers chased down the target in the 42nd over, losing only four wickets. While the Piranhas trapped Josh Payton in front early, Chris Rawlinson combined with Field for a 59-run partnership where the bulk of the damage was done. Two late wickets to the men in pink and white did little to stop the inevitable. Field finished on 42 not out, topping the run-scoring chart for the Snipers.
Meanwhile, the Gundaroo Gunners fell 149 runs short of the 225 total set by the Buffaloes at O’Connor Park. The Gunners were all dismissed for 76 after strong bowling from the Buffaloes. Leg spinner Craig Puniard took a career best of 4/11.
Earlier, Beau Walker opened with a solid 60 while Dave Brown continued his strong form, notching up 95 runs. The Gunners performed admirably after coming into the Triggs Shield from the Sweeney Cup around midway through the season.
In the Sweeney Cup, it was the top-of-the-table clash where Harden travelled to Murrumbateman. The visitors secured a comfortable five-wicket win after bowling Murrumbateman out for 70 in 32 overs. A consolation for the home team was top-order batsman Wayne McIllhatton scoring 37 runs, the second highest individual total for the weekend.
In other Sweeney Cup matches, Boorowa Crocs defeated the YGC Taipans, Binalong bagged the win against the Boorowa Gators and the YGC Colts were declared winners after the Aussie Hotel Pirates forfeited.
The preliminary finals for Saturday, March 4 at 12.30pm are as follow:
- YGC Piranhas vs Bowning Buffaloes (Victoria Park)
- Murrumbateman vs Boorowa Crocs (O’Connor Park)
- Boorowa Gators vs YGC Colts (Bowning)
The Snipers, Harden and Binalong go through to their respective grand finals on Saturday, March 11.
