A grassfire began at a property at Shearsby Crescent just after 3pm on Wednesday, March 8. The fire was ignited from fence welding by the property owner. Neighbours were first on the scene and contacted authorities. In attendance were the Yass Fire and Rescue and the NSW RFS.

In charge was Fire and Rescue firefighter Pete Green, who said despite the cool temperatures, other factors contributed.
“It’s still fairly dry and windy out there. Until we get substantial rain, we can’t be too sure that fires won’t be started,” he said.
Daniel Osborne, RFS Southern Tablelands Zone operational officer, said they were asked to assist.The RFS crews—including two trucks and six firefighters—arrived at about 3.35pm to assist.
The fire was extinguished and declared contained about at about 4pm. Crews worked until 5.05pm to consolidate the containment.
The patch of land also contained five horses, which were moved away when the fire began.
